The best responses will probably have the following characteristics:

1. Introduction
   1. Create interest (explain
      why this is an important issue)
   1. Deconstruct the question (i.e.
      restate the question in your own words to make it clear you understand, perhaps
      highlight any assumptions built into the question and challenge them)
   1. Clear statement of your argument
      (i.e. what you are trying to convince the reader of – please don’t “sit on the
      fence”)
   1. Outline the structure
      the essay will take (e.g. if you will consider three factors which support
      your argument and one against, make this clear at the beginning)
2. Main body
   1. The structure
      should follow that given in the introduction (e.g. consider each of the factors
      identified in the introduction in turn)
   1. Paragraphs should advance
      argument and link to their surroundings
   1. Relevant and accurate references to the law (e.g. articles of the DSU or case reports)
   1. Full use of commentary
      (i.e. academic articles)
   1. Analysis of the law and the
      commentary (i.e. what YOU think) – this is critical and MUST be present
   1. Rounded argument – identify
      (don’t ignore) the arguments against your own – deal with them
3. Conclusion
   1. Sum up the key points
      of the response
   1. Clear answer,
      referring back to the question
   1. Sense of completeness
