Introduction
As it was shown that pain is subjective, the most efficient way to pain assessment is a 0–10 visually enlarged horizontal numeric rating scale (Barr et al., 2013). This method has its limitations as it requires verbal communication. Nevertheless, there are patients that have limited access to communication after surgery due to their altered level of consciousness, the use of mechanical ventilation, or high doses of sedative agents or neuromuscular blocking agents (Barr et al., 2013). Therefore, there is a need for the use of behavioral pain assessment tools. If verbal communication is limited then the health care provider can use behaviors as indicators of pain (Barr et al., 2013). It was shown that the use of these behavioral pain assessment tools can improve the clinical outcomes (Barr et al., 2013).
