The scenario
Jane was moving and she decided to sell a large dining table. She advertised the table in the local free paper which came out on a Wednesday. The next day Sam left a message on voicemail saying he was interested in the table, would pay £500 for it and collect it on Saturday.
He arrived at Jane’s house on the Saturday to find the table had already been sold.
Jane had purchased a very expensive suit to wear at a formal dinner. After the event she took the suit to a dry cleaner as she planned to sell it. The suit jacket was decorated with sequins.
There was a sign near the till saying the dry cleaner took no responsibility for any damage to clothes left with them for cleaning.
When Jane queried this she was told the sign only applied to damage to sequins, beads and embroidery.
When she collected the suit she found back of the jacket was stained. When she complained the dry cleaner referred to the notice.
After a very stressful weekend moving house Jane went back to work. She works for a finance company specialising in car finance. She had arranged finance for Ms Hyde. Ms Hyde had produced a driving licence as proof of identity; Jane had also carried out other identity checks before agreeing the finance package.
Ms Hyde sold the car to Ms Stevenson and defaulted on the loan. The finance company Jane works for has decided to try and recover the car from Ms Stevenson.
