MLA Formatting
MLA is an abbreviation which stands for Modern Language Association style and has a wide use in writing and citing humanities and liberal arts papers. The MLA style has been updated for a number of times and the recent MLA handbook is the 8th edition. This handbook offers guidelines regarding the general formatting of paper, in-text citations, and works cited page as well as footnotes or endnotes.
MLA Formatting-Heading and Title
MLA guidelines require that the paper format to be as follows; the paper should be typed on a standard white paper with the standard dimension of 8.5*11 inches. The paper should be double-spaced and should make use of legible font for instance, 12 fonts Times New Roman which is the recommended.
Italics and regular font should contrast enough to make them easily recognizable. After the periods or other punctuation marks, leave only one space and the margins of the documents should be set 1 inch on both sides.
The first line of the paragraph should be indented half an inch from the left side of the margin. Page numbers should be numbered in a consecutive manner and the page number should be inserted at the top right-hand corner of every page.
The numbering should be ½ inch from the top and should as well be flushed with the right margin. Throughout the essay, it is advised to use italics for titles meant for longer works. In case, the essay involves the endnotes, they should be included on a separate page and should appear before the works cited page. The end note page or section should be titled ‘notes’ and be centered.
MLA does not have a separate title page unless otherwise asked to include it. In the first page on the upper left-hand corner of the first page, include the author or student name, the name of the instructor, the course name, and the date of submission, this content should be double-spaced (Purdue Lab, 2018). Immediately below this content, include the title of the essay and should be centered.
The title should not be written in standard capitalization or title case, do not place in quotation marks, italicized or underlined. When referencing other works in the title use italics or quotation and double space between the title and first line or paragraph of the essay.
MLA Formatting-Heading and Title
In the first page on the upper right-hand of the paper, it is required to create a header containing Arabic numbers which are half an inch from the top and should be flushed to the right margin.
When using section headings which may include chapters, subtitle among others, the sub-sections should be numbered in Arabic numbering style followed by a period and space and then the section name.
When using one level heading, the sections should be parallel and distinct and no additional sections fitted within them. When applying multiple level headings, provide a key to the selected level heading. Level one heading should be bold, flush left, level two heading should be italicized and flushed left, level three heading should be centered and bold, while level four heading should be centered and italics and level five should be underlined and flush left (Purdue Lab, 2018).

In-text citations should be used when one has quoted, summarized or paraphrased works of another author. In this case, one should state the author last name followed by the page number in a parenthesis without a comma between them. In case the author is mentioned in the text, then only indicate the page number only. In case the author is not established using the first few words of the text, period is used after the parenthesis (Purdue Lab, 2018).
When citing direct words that the source have taken from another source, place the author of the information in the text and the write “qtd.in” in the in-text citation, this should then be followed by the author name and page number of the work containing that information (Purdue Lab, 2018). In case one needs to insert his or her own words in the quotation, make use of square brackets, but when in need to omit words use ellipses (three periods).
MLA Formatting-Works Cited Page
Provide a separate work cited page with references used, the page should be titled “Works Cited”, centered not underline or punctuated (Purdue Lab, 2018). The references or entries which are longer than one line should be indented half an inch from the left margin after the first line of each entry. Importantly only include the material used and should be alphabetically arranged according to the first word of the entry.
