Florence Nightingales Legacy

Florence Nightingales Legacy

Florence Nightingale was a nurse whose legacy in her profession and passion for the welfare of mankind is always something worth admiration and emulation. She was the first nurse to be recognized as a theorist in the field and the founder of modern nursing. Nightingale believed in the theory of integral nursing (Concorde Career Colleges, 2017). According to her, there are environmental determinants of health which include clean air, water, food housing and social health determinants such as education, poverty, family relationships and employment. Her legacy highly influences my perception of the millennium development. Apparently, each of the goals is set to enhance the well-being of the human race. Nightingale’s dedication to ensuring the fulfilment of the goals illustrates their importance in not only prolonging lifespan but the health-span of humans.

Reduce child mortality rate, improve maternal health and Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases are millennium goals that I can advance on in my role as a nurse. According to Nightingale, lack of household care of health is the main reason for high mortality rates in children and especially in the developing countries (UN Chronicle, 2007). Child-birth problems and pregnancy-related issues are a major cause of global health concern for women and adolescent girls. Although not all women die from the issues, most survivors suffer pregnancy-related diseases or other related complications (“Millennium Development Goals Report 2013,” 2013. Diseases and especially HIV/AIDS and malaria are also a major cause of suffering and death in the world and especially in the developing countries where there are limited resources to control the illnesses (Beck, Dossey and Rushton, 2011). Nurses can help develop the goals by playing part in enlightening the society on ways to eradicate the issues stipulated in the goals. Nurses and especially community nurses should hold educative forums in the communities to make sure the people there raise their concerns about the health issues affecting them and enquire specialist knowledge. They can also raise concerns to people in power or the media on other health issues they encounter in their work. This they can through activisms and movements that remind people of the need to eradicate poverty and its manifestations in the world.

Florence Nightingales Legacy

In conclusion, Florence Nightingale is worth emulation not only by those in the nursing profession but everyone in a position to improve and enhance the wellbeing of other human beings. Millennium goals were developed by the United Nations with the main aim of reducing poverty and its manifestations. Nightingale, knowing the effects poverty have on mankind, paved way for other humans and more so those in her profession by giving practical examples of how to eradicate it. To honor her legacy, we should continue to build on her work rather than let the legacy remain in historical books.
